Introduction to Software Product Roadmaps

Planning is the first and the foremost thing whether you want to visit some place or to start a new business. This is the basic step without which the foundation of the project can not be laid down. Therefore, the process of planning should be carried with due care and attention. If you are in a business where a new product is being launched, it is important that you first analyze the product growth prospects. For that matter you need to create a product roadmap. Yes! This may require research and development. Considerable time is taken in road mapping the products due to the changing trends of the business world. Especially the software products, which face a serious threat of becoming obsolete due to introduction of more advanced software, the road mapping of the product is extremely important.
They say “thing are easier said than done”. This holds well when you want to create a software product roadmap. However, it is not as difficult as it is thought to be by some people. All you have to do is to stay focused and determined; consider the best features of the product you are offering to the customer and conduct an unmistakable research.  Jotting down your ideas and thoughts will make life easier for you. Going through the features of the products being introduced by your competitor will also serve your purpose and you may shape your strategy so as to give a tough competition in the market.
While creating a software roadmap, one must keep in mind that it should flexible and realistic. Things can be best implemented when they are closest to the reality. So the software product roadmap should also consider the factual and ground realities because overlooking tem may cause irreparable losses.
The very first step in making a software product roadmap is to compiling the ideas. These ideas may be related to the product development, sales, marketing, administration, feature demands by the customers, competitive advantages and advancement in technology. Literally anything which comes to your mind at this point of time, just write it down so that you do not miss anything out at the end while organizing the roadmap.
Organizing is what your next step should be. Well! Organizing your ideas first requires prioritizing these things. You need to look deeper at things. Target marketing is one of the core concepts which determine the fate of any product. So, you have to identify the target markets for which you are going to offer the software product. This will involve a complete market research, considering the possible gaps in the market and the possible expectations of the customers. In addition, the sectors in which you can best earn profits must be identified. Also the level of competition in the identified target markets needs to be carefully analyzed. This process of market research is important because all the future policies will be based on the results of this research. Moreover, the profit margins earned from different target markets also depend on the reliability of market research.
Now you are ready to draft your software product roadmap. You do not need to fly high in the sky at once. Be patient and focused. First start with the product lines which are expected to earn profits in their respective target markets. It is commonly observed that the objectives set out in the software product roadmap are usually realistic. This is done to ensure their proper achievement. The goals need not to be very high because they will be hard to get and may be a cause of disappointment for you.
However, there is no harm in eyeing the long-term opportunities in the market. This will rather increase your level of confidence. This will also develop an air of trust between you and your partner as you will be presenting yourself as a self-motivated company launching the software product.
At the end, the software product roadmap needs to be reviewed by your team and you can obviously alter it in the light of suggestions and recommendations made by your colleagues. New ideas are usually added to the roadmap with the passage of time so as to keep the pace with the changing world.
